October is National Dental Hygiene Month in Falls Church

October is my favorite month of the year.
The air gets crisp. The leaves turn gold and red along West Broad Street. And pumpkin-flavored everything appears overnight.
But for those of us in the dental world, October means something extra special.
It’s National Dental Hygiene Month, and this year’s theme from the American Dental Hygienists’ Association is “The Power of Us”, a reminder that when hygienists, dentists, and patients work together, we create healthier smiles and healthier lives.
I’m Dr. Qurrat-ul-Anne Yousaf, and I practice general and family dentistry at Broadway Dental Associates in Falls Church.
Every October, I watch our hygienists light up when patients ask about Dental Hygiene Month. They deserve that spotlight.
They’re the ones who spend the most one-on-one time with you, who notice the tiny changes in your gums before they become big problems, and who cheer you on when you finally start flossing regularly.
So let’s talk about what this month really means, not just for your teeth, but for your whole body.
And yes, I’ll share some local Falls Church numbers that might surprise you.

A Quick History Lesson (Don't Worry, It's Short)

National Dental Hygiene Month didn’t start as a month at all.
Back in 1949, the ADHA set aside a single week to celebrate dental hygiene and teach the public about oral care. One week, as it turned out, wasn’t nearly enough.
In 2009, the ADHA partnered with the Wm. Wrigley Jr. Company to stretch that celebration across all of October.
Here we are, more than a decade later, still going strong.
What I love about this history is that it wasn’t created by a marketing department. It came from hygienists who wanted people to understand that what happens in your mouth doesn’t stay in your mouth.

Your Mouth Is a Window, Not a Closed Door

Here’s something I tell every new patient: your mouth is a window into the rest of your body. It sounds a little poetic for a dental office, I know. But the science backs it up.
According to the CDC, about 1 in 4 adults in the United States has untreated cavities, and almost half of adults over 30 show signs of gum disease. Those aren’t just mouth problems.
Gum disease, also called periodontal disease, has been linked to heart disease, diabetes, and respiratory issues. In fact, people with gum disease are two times more likely to have or develop heart disease.
Let me put that in perspective. You brush your teeth at night partly because you don’t want cavities. But you’re also doing something for your heart. Your brain. Your lungs. The two minutes you spend at the sink before bed are an investment in your whole body.
And the numbers on productivity loss are eye-opening too.
The CDC reports that about 34 million school hours and 92 million work hours are lost every year in the U.S. due to unplanned dental care. That’s 34 million hours of kids missing class because of something that could have been caught at a routine cleaning.

The "Daily 4", Simple Habits, Big Results

The ADHA has a straightforward framework for daily oral care that I recommend to every patient. It’s called the Daily 4, and it goes like this: brush, floss, rinse, and chew.
That last one often surprises people. Chewing sugar-free gum stimulates saliva, which is your mouth’s natural defense system.
It washes away food particles and neutralizes acids.
It’s not a replacement for brushing, nothing is, but it’s a smart move when you’re stuck in traffic after lunch or running between meetings.

Falls Church: A Healthy Community with Room to Grow

I’m proud to practice in Falls Church. This city consistently ranks as one of the healthiest localities in Virginia.
The CDC reports that 47.2% of adults age 30 and older have some form of periodontal disease. That’s nearly half of us. And many of those people don’t know it yet because early gum disease is often painless.
The takeaway? Falls Church is doing well, but we’re not immune to the same oral health challenges that affect the rest of the country. Gum disease and untreated cavities don’t check your zip code.

The People Behind the Polishing

I want to take a moment to talk about our hygienists. Not in a vague, appreciation-post kind of way, but specifically.
A dental hygienist is a licensed preventive oral health professional. They don’t just clean your teeth. They screen for oral cancer. They take and interpret X-rays.
They educate you on brushing technique, nutrition, and the connection between your medications and your dry mouth.
They’re often the first person to notice that your gums are bleeding a little more than last time, or that a filling from five years ago has started to wear down.
The theme “The Power of Us” captures something real. When a hygienist and a dentist work together with a patient who’s honest about their habits, even the not-so-great ones, that’s when the magic happens.
That’s when we catch problems early, when we can offer conservative treatments instead of major interventions, and when patients actually look forward to their six-month visit instead of dreading it.
I’ve watched patients come in nervous and leave laughing. That’s the power of a hygienist who takes the time to explain, reassure, and celebrate small wins.

How to Celebrate National Dental Hygiene Month in Falls Church

You don’t need a cape or a special badge to celebrate. You just need a few small commitments.
Book that cleaning you’ve been putting off. If it’s been more than six months, this is your sign. You can schedule an appointment online through our patient portal, or call us at (703) 533-8668.
And if cost is a concern, we have payment plans designed to make care accessible. You can also learn more about how we approach cosmetic dentistry and smile makeovers if you’re thinking about improving the look of your smile after we get your oral health on track.
Upgrade one habit. Maybe it’s switching to an electric toothbrush. Maybe it’s finally using that floss you bought six months ago. Maybe it’s adding a fluoride mouthwash to your routine. Pick one thing and stick with it for the rest of October. Small changes compound.
Share the love. Tell a friend about Dental Hygiene Month. Post a picture of your smile with #DentalHygieneMonth. Thank your hygienist at your next visit, I promise it’ll make their day. Our team at Broadway Dental Associates genuinely cares about this community, and a little gratitude goes a long way.
Check in on your kids. Children with untreated dental problems miss school three times more often than their peers with healthy teeth. If your child hasn’t had a checkup this school year, now is a great time.

What I Want You to Remember

National Dental Hygiene Month is a celebration, yes. But it’s also a nudge. A gentle reminder that your oral health is not separate from your overall health. That the two minutes you spend brushing at night matter more than you think.
That the hygienist who cleans your teeth is doing something far more important than polishing enamel.
In Falls Church, we’re fortunate to have a strong dental community and a population that largely values preventive care. But there’s still work to do, especially for neighbors who face barriers to access.
That’s part of why I love practicing here. This community shows up for each other.
So this October, let’s celebrate the power of us. The hygienists, the dentists, the patients, the families. Every person who chooses to take care of their smile is part of something bigger.
Ready to schedule your visit? We’d love to see you. Your smile is worth it.
