6 Things to Do When You Have a Dental Emergency | VA Guide

Dental emergencies never pick the perfect moment to show up. One minute you’re biting into your lunch, and the next, you’re dealing with a cracked tooth or sudden pain that makes your whole day come to a screeching halt.
Knowing what to do before you rush to our dental clinic can make all the difference. The right steps can ease your discomfort, protect your tooth, and sometimes even save it entirely.
So let’s walk through exactly what you should do when a dental emergency catches you off guard.

1. Stay Calm and Take a Deep Breath

I get it, when your tooth is throbbing or you’ve just knocked one out, panic mode kicks in fast. But staying calm is actually your first line of defense. When you’re level-headed, you can assess what’s really going on instead of making things worse.
Take a few deep breaths. Ask yourself: Can I breathe and swallow normally? Is there bleeding? Is the tooth broken, loose, or completely knocked out?
Understanding the situation helps you take the right next steps, and it helps us provide better care when you get here.
Many people make the mistake of ignoring symptoms, hoping they’ll just disappear.
Spoiler: they rarely do. Quick action matters, especially when we’re talking about saving a tooth or preventing infection.

2. Rinse Your Mouth with Warm Salt Water

Before you pick up the phone to call us, there are a few simple things you can do at home to control the situation. Start by gently rinsing your mouth with warm salt water.
This clears away debris, reduces bacteria, and gives you a clearer picture of what’s happening inside your mouth.
If you’ve got food stuck between your teeth that’s causing pain, use dental floss carefully to remove it. Just don’t go poking around with toothpicks or other sharp objects , you could end up causing more damage.
Here’s what to do for specific situations:
For a knocked-out tooth: Pick it up by the crown (the white part you see when you smile), never the root. Rinse it gently with water, but don’t scrub it. If you can, try placing it back in the socket.
Time is everything here, the sooner we can see you, the better chance we have of saving that tooth.
For a cracked or chipped tooth: Rinse your mouth to wash away any small pieces, and cover the sharp edge with dental wax or even sugar-free gum to protect your tongue and cheeks from cuts.

3. Use a Cold Compress to Manage Swelling

Swelling can happen fast, especially if you’ve experienced trauma to your mouth or face.
Grab a cold pack or even a bag of frozen peas wrapped in a towel, and press it gently against the outside of your cheek for 15 to 20 minutes at a time. This numbs the pain and brings down inflammation.

4. Take Over-the-Counter Pain Relievers (But Be Smart About It)

While you’re waiting to see us, managing pain is totally reasonable. Ibuprofen or acetaminophen can help take the edge off and reduce discomfort.
But here’s where people sometimes mess up: never place aspirin directly on your gums. It can burn the tissue and make things worse. It is highly acidic.
Also, if you’re dealing with any bleeding, skip the aspirin entirely, it thins your blood and can make bleeding harder to control.
Stick to ibuprofen or acetaminophen, follow the dosage instructions, and avoid chewing on the affected side of your mouth.
Keep things simple with your diet too. Soft foods and cool liquids are your friends right now. Avoid anything hot, crunchy, or sticky that could irritate the area further.

5. Save Any Broken Tooth Fragments or Dental Work

If your tooth breaks or a crown pops off, don’t toss the pieces. Bring them with you when you come in. Sometimes we can reattach a crown or use fragments to help with the repair.
Even if we can’t use them, it helps me understand exactly what happened and plan the best treatment.
Put the pieces in a clean container or a small plastic bag. If it’s a crown, rinse it gently and try to slip it back on using a tiny bit of toothpaste or temporary cement to hold it in place temporarily.
Just don’t use super glue or anything like that. I’ve seen people try, and it never ends well.
